Link love – do unto others
Posted on 23 December 2008 by Russ
After many blogging workshops and several hours of preaching the value of inbound links to the placement of your blog in the search engines, the number one question on everyone’s mind is how do I get more links to my blog? As an SEO consultant who gets paid to create inbound links and easy for me to say “hire me of course.” However for many start up bloggers hiring and SEO consultant is not always practical. Typically the next thing I tell them to do is to write really awesome content that will be link bait for other bloggers. Although that is a viable strategy and should still be used there is another method that perhaps is more practical for beginner and intermediate bloggers to increase the number of links to their blog.
How would you react to another blogger writing a small blurb about your blog and posting it on their site along with a link? Chances are pretty favorably. Imagine how you would feel if they wrote several intuitive post regarding something that you blog on earlier? Well that’s pretty much the idea behind this post. Except instead of waiting on other bloggers to link to you, why not get things started by linking to them. The simple strategy of linking to others first will eventually (hopefully) lead to them returning the favor and linking back to you.
For example one of my good buddies Todd Schnick, owner of The Intrepid Group has written several very informative articles on his blog. Some of them include his “blogging by thirds” article. Todd gave me a specific mention and even referenced my blogging workshops. I really appreciated that and was encouraged to link back to him.
The other important part of this equation is to leave links to specific articles that you have written and other peoples comments. If you have written a review of another blogger’s product or you have written a positive or negative criticism of one of their articles make sure that you write a comment on their blog referencing that article on your blog. It will surely get the attention of your fellow blogger but also the search engines.
Another example was a great article written on Six Revisions. “A Simple Guide on How to Effectively Talk to Clients” was an article that had great relevance to what I do regularly. I decided to write an article similar to this stating my point of view. I left a comment on Six Revisions which a link to my follow-up article. That comment sends me several dozen visitors per month.
Enjoy, and good luck blogging!

This is good advice – building a community to through links, rather than what is essentially a “win-lose” by just trying to get others to link to you. I guess win-win was the original idea behind link exchanges, but it became shallow as people used this as a way to build links rather than relationships.

It should be a top priority. I typically try to include at least 3 links in every post. Also, don’t forget to leave a tasteful link in a comment, if you really feel that it will add value.

@Russ: I agree with you. I often post about blogs my regular readers and top commentators own. Many blog owners think it will hurt their blog to link to others while they only stand to benefit from this action.
I prefer linking to individual blog posts, this way wordpress can also send them a trackback request so that they know I have linked to them

Good points. Two things come to my mind with this subject. If you want links back you should be the first to reference to others. Its like on twitter, you can’t expect to have people follow you if you don’t follow any yourself. And its important to be engaged and actually converse.
Also, I would recommend disabling nofollow on a blog or using a plugin like commentluv. That to me is being serious about sharing the love. The only thing to consider then is to use a good spam filter and to strike a balance between inbound and outbound links so you wont fall out of favor with the big G.

So you revealed another secret to seek links from good reputed blogs. I think it is much practical and effective to attract someone with lots of traffic rather than leaving a link in a comment to a site which might be related but won’t have anything related to that specific blog.

all you mentioned is a real Muslim`s deed ,plus the iman in the heart, sabar is not easy thing that`s why the saber person will get a big reward. also we dont forget to curse Satan because he make little problem a big one , he will promise u that u will be poor if u give ur money to sadaqa or zakat and he will tell u that Allah wont accept ur dawaa so we have to seek Allah refuge day and night and curse Satan.

You’re right. It’s actually the top question everyone has on building a community through links. Link exchanges have come a long way building links, but not so much building a community of relationships.

It’s a scratch my back and scratch yours method. The method is something very effective cause you will eventually have benefits by linking them into your site. You can even build a good relationship with other people.

Before other bloggers trust your site, you must do the first move. You need to link to them without any condition at all. In this way, you can be sure that you’ll be able to have useful links as possible.

Nice post. I study one thing more challenging on different blogs everyday. It will at all times be stimulating to read content material from different writers and follow just a little one thing from their store. I’d prefer to make use of some with the content material on my weblog whether you don’t mind. Natually I’ll give you a link on your internet blog. Thanks for sharing.

Adding too many links to one single blog could be construed as spamming. I therefore take care not to add more than 2-3 links per blog. This gives me a great variety too.

I fully agree – too many people build a blog and then site back, waiting for the unwashed masses to hammer at the door. It doesn’t work like that; like publishing in the print world, owners need to publicise themselves.

Great tips and i have to agree that people don’t realise that blogging is about content on and off their blog.
