Most of my customers using WordPress are running version 2.5.1, which was released by WordPress a couple of months ago. Folks who an older version of WordPress like 2.3 were usually quite impressed with the added functionality version 2.5 offered. Well prepare to get swept away again.

Twitter is certainly a cool way to keep friends and family abreast on what you are doing. I have used it in the past and have started using it to keep folks up to date on RF Web Studio. I was looking for creative ways to show off my twitter feed. Among the best that I found were the Twitter application for Facebook and the Twitter Badge. There are some more useful Twitter tools at Quickonlinetips.com that Wordpress users may appreciate.

The biggest thing though that I have found is that Google and other search engines index your Twitter Feed. So using relevant key phrases in your Tweets is a good way to get some search engine exposure. Try searching for “Twitter ‘your name’ ” or “Twitter hillary clinton” in your favorite search engine. They are indexed in some way shape of form.

Is Twitter worth the time? I know I don’t wake up and think “hey let me go Tweet”, but I have added the Be Twittered Gadget to my iGoogle Home page, and that makes it pretty easy to add Tweets without interrupting my daily activities and getting too side tracked.

If you are thinking about using Twitter or want to know more about it, read up on Problogger. Of just sign up for a Twitter account and start Tweeting.

I have noticed, as anyone who runs their own blog had undoubtedly as well, a ton of spam comments showing up. Now most of my clients, and even most Wordpress newbs know about askmet and some of the other spam prevention tools available. What I am still stumped over is the high number of garbage websites that are linking to my site, which of course I can not control at all.

For example search this in Google “link: rfwebstudio.com”

Of the results a ton of them are in another language clearly just spammer sites.

So here is my question to the internet/blogger community. What the heck can be done about this?

I have a feeling the answer is ZERO. The scary part is this, this site was launched at the end of 2007, and now roughly 6 months later I have 300 plus spam sites linked to me, I have a Google PR of 2. Is it helping THEM or just hurting ME? Surly the PR of these sites is very low, and I am sure that it is hurting me. I guess the next step here is to drop my web development services, and start selling Viagra.

Well, the Beta version of IE8 was released not too long ago. I don’t really use IE, except when testing new design, but I thought I would give it a whirl, just to see what some of the new things MS was coming up with. Although my wife loves it, I don’t foresee myself making the switch from Firefox to IE. I did find some funny topics on the IE blog on MSDN.

A couple of benefits to using the new and improved Microsoft browser

ACR: Automatic Crash Recovery - automatically reloads previously open tabs upon a crash.

Better support for activities like e-baying.

Increased add on and extension support.

Resize and resolution settings are remembered on next launch.

As for the draw backs, well, let me just sum it up by saying this, you would be better off waiting until IE 9 comes out, then upgrade to IE8! or just get Firefox. For one, upgrading to IE8 Beta, actually crashed my Firefox install. I’m not sure how it happened, but after the restart, I could not launch either browser. That Microsoft for you. Thankfully I had Opera installed, so I could download a new version of FF. If you are upgrading to IE8, please send me your email ad phone number so I can refer you to a PC support person I know.

Happy Browsing!

I know I just encouraged a lot of folks to upgrade to Wordpress version 2.3.2 this month, but Wordpress has released an update that includes some important security fixes. If you would like to have your site updated, just let me know. For my existing clients who have version 2.3.2 installed, I’ll upgrade you for free. If you have version 2.2 or later, I will upgrade it for you for $10. Earlier versions please contact me, and I’ll give you a quote.

From Wordpress.org/development

February 5, 2008
WordPress 2.3.3
By Ryan. Filed under Development.

WordPress 2.3.3 is an urgent security release. If you have registration enabled a flaw was found in the XML-RPC implementation such that a specially crafted request would allow a user to edit posts of other users on that blog. In addition to fixing this security flaw, 2.3.3 fixes a few minor bugs. If you are interested only in the security fix, download the fixed version of xmlrpc.php and copy it over your existing xmlrpc.php. Otherwise, you can get the entire release here.

Also, there is a vulnerability in the WP-Forum plugin that is being actively exploited right now. If you are using this plugin, please remove it until an update is available from its author.

Since we are talking security, remember to use strong passwords and change them regularly. While you’re updating WP and your plugins, consider refreshing your passwords.
